While we lived in New York we figured out that the New Yorkers were grumpy because the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times didn't carry the comics. In other news I'm starting a new job today, it is a second job but I'm excited to do it. The job is from 5pm to Midnight and I'll be video editing for the Church. And on Saturday I went on a fantastic date with a great girl, I hope there will be a repeat.

On Sunay evening Stephen called me and told me to get to his in-laws house to photograph a fire that was started up at Camp Williams. I was up ontop of Rosies parents house taking these pictures, it was fun and I think some of them turned out ok. Enjoy!

Provo Shoot

I've been taking more pictures. The ones of the buildings are all of down-town Provo, I spend a morning walking and shooting down there. The sunsets were taken last night on the hill right above Kiwanis Park in Provo. It's been fun to have Mel's camera this summer, it's helped to keep me sane.

This was taken last night before I went up the hill.

I work evenings at Sundance Resort in the concessions stand for Summer Theater. This years show is "Big River" done by UVU and they have done a really nice job with it.

The title of my post is just a different way of saying, "I'm giving you an update." This past Tuesday I broke a promise to myself that I had made a long time ago, I moved to Utah. I'm now living at Melanie's condo doing an internship with an independent film maker. So far I've only gone to work for three days, but I'm enjoying it and learning a ton. Really, life is good, and I'm being very blessed. I'm trying to find and evening job so that I can survive (the internship is unpaid), but I'm confident that something will show up. All is all, life is good!

Sandpoint...my home

Many of you have heard me speak for countless hours about my home in North Idaho. I love my home, it really is where my heart is. Unfortunately, there is a misconception that north and south Idaho are the same thing, they most definitely are not. These are some shot that I've taken over the past few days and I think that they show my home well. Enjoy!

I love hard labor, it makes me happy. I just finished plowing, disking, and planting a field at the back of our property. It was dusty, I got dirty!

Holy Land Video

Lost in the 50's

There are a few things that I absolutely love about living in a small town, one of them is the parades. We have two parades every year that I really don't like missing, the 4th of July and Lost in the 50's. Lost in the 50's is a when people come from all over the place to show off their vintage cars, I"m not a car person, but the cars really are amazing.

The trees are budding right now and the yellow/green stuff comes from the buds, it's a wonderful time of year.

They just don't design cars like they use to, I love the detail in the old cars.

I have often said that I was supposed to be born in the first half of the 20th century, the life seemed simpler. For some odd reason, this truck made me think of the old-time farm, I would love to be able to travel back in time and partake of that time for just a little while.

These next two shots are of my good friend Bob's car. Bob loves cars, and he loves this car. Since I was a little kid I can remember Bob's flaming car. So here it is, a walk down my memory lane.

Camera Mount

Hello everyone,

I made it back from Israel/Palestine without any problems, it was a wonderful trip, thank you to all who helped. So, I'm in the process of buying video/photo equipment, this is to strengthen my portfolio and make sure I don't loose the skills that I already have. I have decided to buy the Canon t21, it's a DSLR that can shoot in full HD video and takes great photos (I hope, I still have to make enough to buy it). I have also just bought a new computer (a 13" macbook pro) along with the editing software I need, this is all very pricey, but I hope that it all pays off in the end. One thing that it really fun with film is trying to figure out how to keep the camera steady when moving, a DSLR has other interesting problems (it's not made for steady continues shooting, just one at a time), so I took an existing product and created a mount that really helps keep things steady. These things can be super expensive, but mine only cost $4!! Anywho, all is well.

Yes, that is my 'Flip' attached to the mount, it's all I have right now, so don't laugh.

This 'feature' is really nice with the DSLR, it makes it so you can still hold the camera with your right hand and the left side gives it nice stability.

BYU-Idaho Article

I had some time at the Center today, so I decided to write a small article for the newspaper at BYU-Idaho, I have no idea if it will make it in, but here it is, I hope you enjoy it.

Every day I open my eyes and the Holy City is there to greet them. The Dome of the Rock, the Mt. of Olives, and the Garden Tomb, unchanged from one year to the next, teach me lessons that can't be forgotten.
Each semester dozens of students from all walks of life leave the Idaho, Provo, and Hawaii campuses to study abroad in Jerusalem. There is no place quite like Jerusalem, it is an ancient city, a holy city. From my first moments here I realized this. I also came to understand that we as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are not the only ones in the world who feel strongly about what we believe. This became apparent to me my first morning here, when I was awakened at dawn by the call to prayer of the Muslims. It was shortly after this first experience that we ventured into the city, where we visited some of he most holy sites in this land; the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the Western Wall, and the Dome of the Rock.
Although these sites are important and sacred to many people, I have found that it's the people that matter. I was able to feel the dedication of Christians worldwide when I participated in the Triumphal Entry and services on Easter Sunday, these are people with strong faith in Christ, they know the He is their Savior. I came to better understand the Jews one Friday night when I was able to welcome in the Sabbath with them at the Western Wall; it was there that I say their joy in being able to worship freely. I am touched when I think of the many Muslim bus drivers I've seen who pull out their prayer mats and pray each time we stop for a few moments, their dedication and faith had strengthened my own.
These lessons are not the only ones I have learned, the students I am with never cease to buoy me up and show me the way. One can imagine that after three and a half months of living in close proximity with 82 students that things could get silly, and they sometimes do. However, I cannot count the times I have rounded a corner here at our beloved center and seen one or two students reading the scriptures, praying, or writing in a journal, their insights and the examples amaze me. President Hinckley often told us that we, this generation, were good kids, my testimony of that has been strengthened because of the examples of my fellow students.
I can say that I have traveled the world after this expedience, I've seen from Egypt to the Galilee, and from Jordan to the Mediterranean Sea. But, I have learned on very important lesson; it doesn't matter where you are in this world, whether it be Rexburg or Jerusalem, if we look around us, we will find the good, our faith will grow. I am grateful for this experience, I am glad that I came, I am blessed to have rubbed shoulders with the wonderful people of this world who love God and love their fellow men, these are lessons I will never forget.

So, here are some random pictures that I decided to put up. Hope you all enjoy them!

I was feeling artsy (yes me) the other day so I decided to make this piece, it kind of sums up what I feel about this experiance.

This is the sunset at Shephards Field, you can see why Christ loved this land.

This is the "Suk". The suk is the marketplace in West Jerusalem, it's lound and crazy, that's what makes it fun. I really wish we had markets in the states.

This crouch has become one of my trademarks in pictures. This is on top of a mountain in Jordan!

This is on top of the Jordanian mountains, it was all rock and beautiful.

So, the other day a few of us went out and met some new folks. The kid with the curly hair is named Matt, he's from the Chek Republic. We kept running into him at differnt sites, so we invited him to tag along. We even brought him to the center afterward to see it, he was a really neat kid. The only girl in the picture is Shonni. Shonni is an LDS girl from DC. She was in Isreal to pick up a pacient, she's an international nurse. She actually met us at the center in the morning and we spent the day showing her around, she was super cool and way nice. This day was one of my very favorites in Jerusalem.

This is Haifa, it's a nice city right on the coast.

This is the famous Dead Sea mud, it smelt like sulfer but was really fun.

For those of you who didn't know, I'm a rock in the water, the second I stop moving I sink straight to the bottom, so this picture is a mirical happening (and no, it's not because of how fat I've gotten here).

I think I should sent this picture to Chaco and entitle it "Chacos in Petra."

Catch Up

Just a quick update (I'm studying for finals tomarrow). Jordan was great, it was clean and was a neat country. Petra was amazing, there was way more there then I would have ever thought. The past little bit I have been having fun in the city and studying. Monday was a great day for me. I spent all day in city showing two people who had never seen it around, it was fun to feel their excitment, and they were great people. All in all life is good. I'll try to get some pictures up later. Chau!

Palm Sunday

Good day,
It really has been a fantastic day. As many of you know, it is La Semana Santa (Holy week ) and today was Palm Sunday. It has been one of the most wonderful days I've had here in Jerusalem. I've written before on how this city is a city of religious devotion and how that has touched me. Well, it happended again today. This morning I went to the Chuch of the Holy Seplecure to see the festivities. The church is shared between the Cotholics, the Greek Orthodox, the Armenian Orthodox, and the Coptic Christians from Egypt. That is jusht the main part of the church, there are also carious African churches/sects connected to it. So, imagine walking into a church that is shared byall of those different donominations and seeing them worship on one of their most holy days, and all in their own unique way. I was able to see people form all over the world, literally. It was so amazing to see the devotion of these people. I saw many people praying, many singing, and many people in tears. On thing tha impressed me was the 'Laying Stone.' In the church there is the traditional stone where they lay Christ body to prepare it for burial. The tradition is to kiss the stone, except on a day like today. Women (I only say women do this) anoint/wash the stone, as part of the process they use the scarves off of their own heads to wash the stone, they then kiss the stone and pray. it was here theat I saw the most tears, it was very touching for many of these women.
This afternoon wa got to participate in the Triumpful Entry. The percetional started over in the Bethany area and went up and over the hill into Lions Gate at Jerusalem and ended in St. Annes Church. THe percetional was incredible. There were literally thousands of people, and many of them were singing and praying in different languages. Yet again, it was good to see the devotion of these people. There were many pepole who had a difficult time walking because of injury or age, but they did the walk (and it was hot), it was incredible to see.
The day ended with a parade like thing that the local scouts did. I had no idea that there were scouts in Jerusalem. It was cool to see these kids wearing some of the same patches I wore.
To sum it up, it was a great day. Chau!

I'm back from the Galilee and it was great! I don't have tons of time to write right now but here are some pictures, I'll tell you all about it later.

This is some sort of fruit blossom in the water at Ceaseria Philipi

The Church has a small branch in Tiberias on the Galilee. The branch meets in a renovated home that is beautiful, this is the view you get from the chapel.

The Sea of Galilee (which is really a lake, Lake Pend Orielle is bigger) is wonderful and way fun.

This was taken up at Nimrods Castle. The castle is huge and really neat. While exploring I found the old cistern and it had over two feet of water in it, it was great!

This is a shot of the church on Mt. Tabor, the traditional site of the Transfiguration. I loved Tabor and this church, it is one of my favorites.

This is an old market place in Accor. Accor was the 'capitol' of the crusaders.

This is on Arbel, it's an overlook of Galilee. I'm standing on a cliff edge that was very pretty.

If you ever get to go to Tel Dan, do it, this is what you find, streams, springs, and green, I loved it.

Where the Jordan River leaves the Sea of Galilee there is a spot where people from all over the world come to be baptized. It was interesting to see how folks do it, but it was good to see peoples devotion.

Pictures of the Holy Land

Hello ya'all. I told Mum that I'd put some more pictures up today, so here are a few more.

Today I went down the Kidron again. There are a few really neat tombs there that I enjoyed climbing through. This opening is about 20 feet up and gave us a good view of the east side of the city.

This was taken on top of the Armenian hostel on the Via Dolorosa. I think that this picture really shows the diversity of Jerusalem. It is important to remember that Jerusalem is a holy city for Muslims (as we see with the Dome of the Rock in the back), Christians (with the closer dome), and for the Jews, this is what really makes Jerusalem a near place.

I returned back to the small cemetery in the Kidron, it's a neat place, I really like it.

This is the Dome of the Rock and the ___ Gate (I don't remember the name right now, but it's the gate that Christ is suppose to go through at the second coming).

Here's a picture looking up at the tomb I mentioned earlier.

The Western Wall is one of my favorite places in Jerusalem. The wall is the most holy spot for Jews. It is custom to fold prayers or requests and put them in the cracks. The papers are taken out every so often and stored, in Jewish tradition it is not right to burn or destroy anything with the name of God on it, so they have places all over the country where they store these papers. The wall is sacred because it is the closest thing they Jews have to the temple. So these are a couple of pictures of the prayers, it's a special place.

This is taken from the plaza in front of the Western Wall, like the photo above I love this because it shows the Western Wall (on the bottom right) and two Muslim places of worship.

Neot Kedumim

Good Morning/evening,
I hope that all is well in the homeland. Today we were able to go to Neot Kedumim. Neot Kdumim is a garden/reserve for all of the plants and animals found in the Bible and Torah. We saw many flowers and herbs, herded sheep and goats (I watched that one and laughed most of the time, it was great!), built fires and cooked homemade pittas on it (I built and tended one of the fires, it was manly), and were able to see some really nice stuff. The reserve is about a hour south of Jerusalem in the hill country, so it was beautiful. So here are some pictures from the day:

This is a foot-powered water wheel. It was amazing how much water it could scoop up.

This is my whole class, we ground up oregano here and talked about it's significance in the scriptures (it's called hisip in the scriptures).

This tree was neat, it looked nicer in real life, but it had long "leafs" of small yellow flowers.

Valleys

Ok, so today after class we all left. I spent the afternoon in the Kidron Valley and the Hinom Valley. It was a wonderful afternoon. It is spring here so much of the land is green, I love it. So here are a few pictures of where we went.

These are some weed flowers. I know that you're disappointed in me Mel, but I really liked these flowers.

Down on the south side of the Kidron (the valley actually runs to the dead sea, but south of me) by the Church of All Nations, there is a small abandoned cemetery hidden among the olive trees. The spot was very peaceful and beautiful, I would like to go back there. This is one of the headstones, most of them were broken.

This is Silwan (I'm sure I spelt that wrong). It sits opposite (east) of the City of David and is a political hot spot right now, but I really liked it.

This was taken in the Hinom Valley. The name actually means the Valley of Hell because it is the traditional site where Judah bought land and where he hung himself (not fun, I know). But in the valley there was a neat little monastery that had a bunch of catacombs in it, some even had the bones still hanging around. As we walked up the valley we explored other caves and catacombs and climbed big rocks, Ryan would have been proud!

These are three of my favorite people here at the JC. Going from left to right we have Brian Masterson (army extraordinaire and a redhead), Ali Goodfellow (energy and smiles), and Daniel Benson (all around good guy who can sing first tenor, and does for the BYU Mens Chorus). This show was taken on the way to a Scottish church we went to. We sang "Nearer my God to thee," "Lead Kindly Light," "Rejoice the Lord is King," and "Praise to the Lord the Almighty (#72)" in the chapel. The chapel had really nice acoustics and it was really fun.

Here is a millipede, they're nasty little buggers but really cool.

This is the entrance to one of the tombs in the Kidron Valley. I love all the stone work here in the Holy Land, it's much nicer than what we use in the States.

Sunrise

These are a couple of shots of a sunrise the other morning, it was great. This morning I headed to the zoo here in Jerusalem, it was nice to get out and about, we've been on a kind of lock-down for the past two weeks, nothing to worry about. Anywho, life is great!

I just finished my Islam final. I really enjoyed the class, it was hard and quite different, but it was a neat cultural experience. Tomorrow I have my Arabic and Field Trip finals, so just one more day and I'll be able to do some real exploring here in the Holy Land. So, that's life. Mi Salame.

Some Pics

So...it's still raining here in Jerusalem, at least t was until about 30 minutes ago. I went outside to stretch my legs and it was amazing. It's not very often you see great clouds and the city literally sparkling from the rain and the sun, but today was one of those days. All of the pictures below (except the minaret) were taken on the 7th and 8th floor just a few minutes ago. Enjoy!

Stormy days

Hello world!! It's been stormy here for the past two days, it's wonderful!! I love it becasue it's cool, and I miss the cold, we need rain, and I think it's beautiful when it rains here. So here are some pictures I took this morning on the 6th floor looking over the city.

So, I thought I would post some photos. These are from all over, but mostly from yesterday. We were in the City again, it was an interesting field trip.

This is the Step Pyramid, it's the oldest one in Eygipt and it was my favorite.

This is Lynett and I waiting to get into the Burnt House. Lynett is in the other class so I still don't know her super well.

This is taken up in the Jewish Quarter of the Western Wall. There were a number of Bar-mitz-fas yesterday. It was interesting to see how differnt sects of Judaism do it. The Orthodox was pretty chill while that Arab Jews were having a party.

This is on the the nw courner of the Temple Mount. There are very few places we know where Christ actually walked and this is one of them. It was really neat.

The over-night train from Luxor back to Cairo, it was an experience!

Ladies and Gentlemen, Welcom to Cairo.

This is in an old water tunnle, same function as Hezikiahs Tunnle, but this one is along the western wall of the Temple mount. This whole escavation is right under modern day homes and churches.

This is another place we know Christ would have walked. These are the steps leading from the City of David up to the Temple Mount. This was part of the group I was with yesterday.

Another Free Day

It was a good day. This morning I went to Hebrew University, it's across the street, to get some fast Internet. I needed to do some updates on my computer that I couldn't do here, so my computer is working again! The good part of the morning was going to David's Citadel. For a long time this was the believed spot of Davids Palace, they have since found a more probable location, but it was neat. There were some really good views of West Jerusalem from on top of the walls. We walked back to the center via the fallafal/shuarma shop at Damascus Gate, it was tasty! The rest of the day has been homework, it's going to be a busy week. I did apply for another job at BYU-I, this one is a more probable score, it's a full time grounds crew member, I think it would be fun. Anywho, wall is well. Have a wonderful Sabbath!

Hello Family and friends!
Life is good in the Holy Land, super busy with finals coming up, but that's how it is with school. I did however just get the chance to escape to the city for a few minutes this afternoon. As many of you know, Catholics all over the world are celebrating Lent this month. Jerusalem is one of the most sacred sites for Catholics according to my understanding. Wit that in mind you can imagine that the City is busier then usual. But what I want to share is actually a thought for some dear friends back home. Many of you know the Ometts, they're my neighbors and they're wonderful. This afternoon I went and walked the Via Dolorosa with many of the priests and nuns of the city, along with many catholics from all over the world. The Via Dolorosa is believed path that Christ walked with the cross to Golgotha where he was crucified. Now, why did I think of the Ommets? Being a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I don't do are believe in most of the traditions of the Catholics, I do however respect them. The Ommets are special people to me and I'm just doing a shout out to them, even though they don't read this blog, commending them for being a few of the many faithful Catholics I have seen here and around the world. This devotion is one of the things I like about Jerusalem, you see people from everywhere coming here because it is sacred and holy to them. So if you ever get a chance to go and walk with the clergymen and women, and the many devout people here in Jerusalem, I say do it. Anyway, life is good, just missing the snow and the cold (and I don't say that in jest). Chau!

I guess this works considering it is morning over yonder in the USofA. It's been a good day, I even got to take a nap this afternoon! This morning however was great! This morning we went and visited the City of David. It's interesing to get a good feel for where things happened and where they were. But the hightlight was Hezkiah's Tunnel. The tunnel is like half a mile long and still has water flowing forth, the deepest it got was to about mid thigh (my thigh). Anywho, the tunnel was just neat, I enjoyed being in there and playing in the water. Dad's camera was really neat in there, I was able to get some cool video/pictures of my feet under the water. Anyway, life is great. Love ya all!

It has been a very nice day. I want to a Greek orthodox mass this morning in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, it was interesting, as usual. One thing that made is quite different was the back round noise. It's important to remember that the Church of the Holy Sepulchre is shared by a number of different churches, so it's possible to hear multiple things going on at once. After the church we (a kid named Bryan and a girl named Allison) went to the YMCA to play/hear the bells. This was my third time doing the bells, but I really enjoy doing it. It was then off to the Suk (that's with a long "u"). The suk is an outdoor market, it was a lot of fun. I bought myself a really good fake Argentine jersey, I love it. After all that it was back to the center for a tasty dinner and a movie (or two). We watched "Charade" and then I watched much of "The Blind Side." The latter is one I highly recommend with the language edited. There wasn't much, but it was enough to not be good. But the movie and the messege was incredible. A lot of the movie reminded me of the projects in New York, it brought back a lot of memories. Anywho, all is well, I"m happy and good. Have a happy Valentine.

That title comes from a Michael Buble song, it's a good song and it just came to me. Anywho, life if good. School work here is busy, tons of reading, but it's good. Life is kind of in limbo right now, we're all waiting to go to Galalee here in two weeks and so all that really happens is school and trying to stay busy. I continue to look for work, I've sent out a number of resumes (I think I'm over 15), I've been told that often times you need to send out over 60, so I'm still shy a few, but I will continue the hunt. There really isn't too much to report. Have a good one!

The Hill Country

Well, we had another great field trip. We were in the foothills below Jerusalem and it was beautiful, I really enjoyed it. Here are a couple of photos.

This is the Valley of Elah, yep, the same one where Daved slew Galioth. This was a fun place, we spent about 20 minutes trying to figure out how to use the slings!

This is at Tel Lequish. This was one of Isreals biggest and strongest forts back in the day, it was neat.

This was the caves of Micha. In this picture I'm about 10' above the ground. The caves were cool and really dirty, the stone was really soft and would rub off on everything.

It's raining in Jerusalem!!! I went out to the city this afternoon, it was fun, and really wet. The great thing about the rain is the Old City is way less crowded, I didn't have to fight any crowds! There isn't anything real new, I've just had a free afternoon. Actually...I guess that applying for jobs is new. Over the last two days I've found time to apply for 19 jobs, or something like that. I applied at Coldwater Creek, Back Country, The North Face, and Madason Memorial Hospital. I actually feel pretty good about the Back Country job, I actually fit all of the requirements. Anywho, I'd love to chat, but not now. Chau!

I just noticed something that made me chuckle. You know how at school, or in life, people form clichs? It's funny how even here, 8,000 miles away form home and with only 82 students, the same thing happens. I just noticed that the California girls are with the other Cali girls, the artsy folks are with the artsy folks, and so on. Anywho, I found that funny. Hasta luego!

Mid-terms

Life is good. This week has been a crazy homework week, it really makes sense seeing we didn't do any in Egypt. I took two mid-terms this morning, I didn't do too hot. My Old Testiment one went fine, I think I'll get a "B" on it. After my OT test I took my Judaism mid-term, I got a 66% on it, GRRRRRR. This was frustrating because I really do know the material. I spent almost all of yesterday studing. I did something I'm natorious for, changing my answers. If I had kept my original answers I would have scored a 87.5%, but I didn't go with my gut feeling, I'll learn to do that one of these days. But I"m optomistic about my grades, there are a number of extra credit opportunities, so I feel ok. Life really is good, I'm happy and having fun. Chau!

As the title says, this has nothing to do with this study abraod. I've been thinking alot lately about what I should do when I get back to the States. I'm all graduated in Communications, but I don't know what I want to do. I keep going back to film, but that would start me all over in college, and not at one of the CES schools. I would love to study it at BYU but it's not possible. I thought about getting a MBA, but to be honest, I despise business, that would be pure torture. One reason I want to do film is to film documenteries. For over two years now I've wanted to do a piece on the History of the Church in Argentina. My great grandpa was one of the first members in Argentina and it's a piece of history that would be fun to do. I also would love to work for the Church. Well, I'm babbaling, sorry. I'm just needed to get some steam out of my head. Thanks

Egypt

Hello fromt the JC! Well, we had a succesful trip to Egypt, it was fun, interesting, and only a few people got sick (I think we made a new record for fewest sick!). We started down two thursdays ago (the 21st), that day we stopped at beer-Sheeba, or Isaacs well, and the barial place of David Ben Gurian. That evening we had dinner at a Kabutz that specializes in dairy, I don't know why, but I'm really glad I don't live on a Kabutz. That night we stayed in a Kabutz on the boarder of Israel and Egypt, in a city called Avdat, it was neat. The next morning we weren't actually sure we were going to make it to Cairo, there had been heavy rains a few days earlier and the roads were washed out in Egypt, but our Egyptian bus drivers were amazing and were able to get to the boarder and pick us up. We were stuck there for over an hour because they had our Egyptian visas. That night we made it to Cairo and we saw a light and sound show at the pyramids, they really exist! The next morning we actually spent time at the pyramids. The neatest part about the pyramids was going inside. The whole group went inside one and we sang "High on a Mountain Top" in the burial chamber, that was amazing, I love the hymns of Zion! We also saw the Step Pyramid that day, it's the oldest one of the bunch. That night we flew to Luxor. Luxor was great, if you go to Egypt spend the majoraty of your time there. At Luxor we saw the Vally of the Kings, it's where many of the Pharos were buried and where they found the tomb of King Tut. We also saw the Temple of Hatcheapsuit, the Temple of Karnag, and the Temple of Luxor. These structures were amazing, it's hard to believe that they were built without modern-day equiptment. I found it interesting that the Egyptians believe that there was no slave labor involved in building everything, I don't believe it. The best part about Luxor was the Nile. I know that the Nile is in Cairo too, but Luxor has 200,000 people and Cairo has something like 20 million, therefore the Nile was a little nicer, and it's upstream from Cairo. We spent some nice time on the Nile, on boats and our hotel was on it. Sunsets in Luxor are amazing, and the Nile just made it better. We were in Luxor for two nights and three days. On the third night we took an overnight train back to Cairo, that was an experiance. I think that travaling by train should become popular again, I really enjoyed it. But if it does become popular again the rule has to be "NO SMOKING." The man in charge of our car smoked a ton, as do most people in Egypt, but it's hard to fall asleep, breath, and wakeup to smoke, I can say I hated that. But we made it to Cairo in one piece and pretty tiered. That day we did that Cairo Musiem. and the bazaar, the market. That mrket is considered to be one of the biggest in the world. I find that I get into securaty mode when I'm in places like that, no one looks at or touches my girls (the girls I'm with), in fact, I found that if you put on a hard face most people stay far away from you. Now that is against my nature, but the men in Egypt are very vocal about American girls and I don't appreciat that. The next morning we did the Citagl and Muhammad Ali Masque, those were neat. We then headed for the Siani. The Siani is a barran wilderness, that's all I have to say. At 2:30 the next morning we got up and hiked Mt. Siani. Siani was neat, cold, but the sunrise was amazing. I had no special feelings on Siani, I wasn't expecting too, but many were. I loved seeing our Heavenly Fathers creations though, the sun and the mountains were great! After Siani we showered (it was cold and Tiggers don't like cold water) and headed for Isreal again. That day was a long one but it was worth every minute because we got home to the JC!!! It's amazing that this feels like home, ya'all told me it would, and it does. Egypt was a great experience, I really loved it. The people were great and I didn't get sick, so what more can I ask for. Yesterday was Jerico day, and it was great! One of the things that made it awesome was the rain. I doesn't rain very often in Jerico, it's in the Judean Wilderness, but yesterday was the exception. The air smelt wonderful, all of you Arizona people understand the desert rain smell, and the best part was the tempeture, it was cool. We went to the Mt. of Temptations Monastery or the Quruntul Monastery first. The monastery is literally built on the side of a cliff. It was built in the late 1800's and looks like it belongs on the mountain. It's built to comemorate the temptation of Christ. They (Greek Orthodox) believe that Chirst went to that mountain to fast 40 days and nights and that it was there that satan came to tempt him. They actually have a rock that they believe is the actual rock that satan wanted Christ to change into bread. Anyway, there was a great view from on top of the monastary, we could see the Dead Sea and the entire valley of Jerico. From there we headed to Tel-Jerico. Tel-Jerico is the ruin of Jerico. A tel is a city built on top of a city, built on top of a city, until it creates a huge mound. Jerico is supposed to be the oldest city on earth. The city it's self was much smaller then I expected, they suspect that only about 2,000 lived inside of the city walls when the Isrealites conquered it. We ate lunch there and a man at a fruit stand gave me something called a "pamelo," I think, it's a mix between a grapefruit and an orange, but more than double the size, it was great! We headed to get a look at Harods Summer Palacem there's a small foundation left and then up the road to a great overlook of the Judean Wilderness. The Wilderness is barren, I wouldn't have wanted to walk through there back in the day. The day was good and really interesting. Life is good, we're headed to Egypt in just a couple of days! Walking and Spanish

It was a wonderful day, it was a free day. This morning I got some homework done, we're headed to Jericho tomorrow and I needed to get ready academically. At 10am a few of us headed to the Jerusalem YMCA, you've never seen a YMCA like this one. The building is right across the street from the King David Hotel, that's where presidents stay, and is huge. It is all stone with a huge bell tower. We went to there to play the bells actually. The organist for the center goes every Sunday and plays. I was able to play "Lead Kindly Light," "For the Beauty of the Earth," and "Teach me to Walk in the Light," it was an incredible experience. Ofter the tower we headed over to a few museums, it was great. Matt, I bought my first Falafal, GREAT! This evening was the real highlight of the day. A Holocaust survivor came to speak to us. His name is Elias, he's from Poland. Elias only speaks Hebrew and Spanish (he lived in Guatemala for 22 years after the war), so I had the opportunity to translate some for him. He was an amazing person, he radiated love for everybody, including the Nazi Germans. He said he lives by two motto's; Believe in God and Work to Live! Elias is a practicing Jew and was really amazing to hear, I recorded the whole thing. Well, I need to head to bed. Thanks again for all who made this possible, it has been amazing! God Bless.

Welcoming in the Sabbath

The last few days have been wonderful. Last night we went to the Western Wall to welcom in the Sabbath with the Jews, it was an incredible spiritual experience. We got there about an hour before sunset. I had bought a kippa the day before and put it on once we got to the plaza. At first I felt awkward, almost sacreligious, wearing their thier religious garb. But by the end of the night I felt to be a major part of thier seramony. The Ultra Orthodox jews were on the far north side of the wall praying. I loved watching thier devotion, they let nothing distract them. On the far south side of the plaza a huge group of young jews, more my age, were gathering, they were singing and dancing. The dancing and the singing was lound and very physical. I was confused at first, but I asked our district president and he said that the sabbath is a time of joy and that they believe that they must worship with all their heart, might, mind, and strength and that thru dance they are able to express that. Once the sun went down I went down by the wall where all of the jews were praying and worshipping. It is important to remember that the Western Wall is one of the most sacred places for the jews, so it was neat to be there with them. A few of us were standing near a group of dancers and got sucked in. For over an hour we sang and danced with this people. It may sound weird, but it was an incredible spriritual experience. The devotion and the faith of these people were strong and I could feel it. I feel blessed to have been there.
This afternoon after church the whole group went to the Garden Tomb for the first time. The tomb is kept up by a Brittish charity and is very beautiful. Our guide was a man from London and was excited about his belief in Christ, yet again, good to see people devoted to their beliefs. The Garden Tomb was a spiritual place for me. There are two suspected places for Christ barrial, the Church of the Holy Seplecure and the Garden Tomb. I have been to both places. The Church of the Holy Seplecure was neat, and it was neat to see people travel from all over the world to be there. Many religions believe that the Church is the place, but I wasn't feeling it. At the Garden Tomb I felt something special today, that's all I'm going to say.
So to say the least, it has been a wonderful past few days. I've learned alot about others devotion and how they worship. God bless!

So, life is good. Today I didn't leave the Center once, I stayed in a studied. Classes are going well, very heavy work load. Folks told me that the work load was heavy, I think that they could have enphasised that a little more. I had my first Arabic class today, it was way fun. I have really enjoyed learning Arabic on the street, it's been really fun. Well, all is well. Mi salame!

We had our first field trip of the trip, it went well. This trip was the geography field trip, we went to a nuumber of lookouts to see the city from different vistas. My favorite was south east of the city, it was on top of a hill overlooking Bethlehem and Jerusalem. This country is amazing. I had an interesting thought today. My professor was talking about the current struggle between the Isrealies and the Palastiniens (the Jews and the Muslems), he mentioned that they are fighting for sacred places and that's why the sepration wall is so contriversial. I had the thought; "I'm so glad we have the preisthood, if we want a sacred place, we just dedicate a new one. If you want to move your wall further into my territory, great! I'll just dedicate a new place). I'm so grateful for the gospel. Well, that's about it for today!

My first free day

Wow, what a day! Today was our first free day in Jerusalem. We started out with changing our money over. We walked to Lions gate, which was really nice in the morning, it was cool outside and the gate wasn't busy at all. We headed to the West Wall and the Dome of the Rock, they were incredible. Dad, I didn't see what you told me to look for, I'll have to look again. We headed to the Church of the Holy Seplecer after that, but we took too long shopping (I was with a bunch of girls), so we didn't even go into the church. For the next few hours we did the rampart walk, it was incredible! With that walk you see most of the Old City from up above, it was incredible. Last of all we walked into west Jerusalem and got gilatto, I didn't, I found homeade alfahores next door, so I got one of those. So to sum it up, it was an incredible day. Sabbath

My first sabbath in Jerusalem. We have church in the most incredible hall, there are nothing but windows behind the speakers and a view of the Old City. One suprize at church was sunday school in spanish. There are three latinas in the branch, so they have a spanish class, it was great! This afternoon I headed down to the Orson Hyde park and the Garden of Gethsemane. Both gardens were peaceful and beautiful, I really enjoyed it. All is well, I'm happy and very blessed! Mi Salame.

It's been a good day. We started with classes this morning, they're going to keep me very busy. Later this afternoon we were let loose in the city. Me and 7 others went to the Old City for an hour and a half (it's friday and you only have about 2 hours to be int he East Jeruselem and the Old City). The city is going to take some getting use to. I feel really uncomfortable not knowing the language, it makes me feel tiny and useless, but that feeling will pass. It's fun to watch the other members of the group get excited and talk to the shop keepers, I love people watching. I'm excited to really get into classes so that I can undrstand what I'm seeing and what everything means. I'm well and happy!

I'm exausted, but happy. Today has been good thus far (it's about 4pm here). This morning we had some meeteings, and a few this afternoon. But the good part about today was the walk through the city. We split up into small groups and the faculty took us all over east Jeruselem, the Old City, and West Jeruselem. The city is different then I imagined, but I really enjoyed it. I was at the back of my group acting as shepard, just making sure that no one got left behind. At the back with me were a couple of the J.C. security guards. I started to learn Arib form them, it was great, and quite hard. Well, all is well. Mi salame!

The Holy Land

I'm here, in the Jeruselem Center. The flight was really long, and every one of them was delayed. But, it's great to be here. We arrived late, but got right into dinner (very tasty!). After dinner we had a few small orientations and a tour of the Center. The Center is one of the most beautiful buildings I have ever seen, it's incredible. There really isn't anything to report, I'm happy to be here and to be here safe. Chau!

Well, Mel emailed me today and remined me that I needed to update my blog. First of all, yes, I did break up with Chelsea. It was hard but the right thing to do. I'm back in school for the summer, which is really different. I must say that I miss the farm way more then I had expected. I'm currently taking 18 credits, working at night, and trying to be social. All in all life is wonderful, I'm really enjoying it!

Well, I'm back at school. Life is great and school is great., But the best thing is that went on an awesome date last night. I went with a girl from my clogging class named Chelsea Strong. We made dinner (homeade pancakes and bacon and homeade buttermilk syrup), went iceskating, and chatted for like 2.5 hours, it was great.

Well...

Life is crazy busy. With 19 credits, two jobs, a musical, and being part of the spanish newscast here on campus, it keeps me pretty busy. And for those of you who worry that I never go on dates; I went on one yesterday afternoon with a way cool girl named Brittany. Not only didi we go on a date but last night at like 10:30pm we went and kicked a soccer ball around at the stadium. See, I'm not a slacker. The show is coming along really well, we open on the 18 of this month. I still find it interesting that people try to use theater as an excuse to be risque. Your standards shouldn't change just because you have an excuse. Ya know? life is pretty good, crazy, but good.

Fun Week

Well, this week was good and the end of it was fun! On thursday the school hosted a ward 5o-lap relay. The relay is a a race and the ward that wins is given a reward. My ward did really well and we almost all died, it was under freezing outside. After the relay we had a soccer game at 10:15pm, it was am absolute blast! Last night I went and played soccer in the stadiam by myself in the snow, it was awesome, I loved it. I love the snow, it's wonderful. All else in life is great!

Well, another week under the belt. This week has been really busy, I guess that's what happens when your taking 19 credits, working, and in a musical. I actually started rehearsals this week for "She Loves Me" and I think that the show is going to be a lot of fun. No new up dates on the love life, pretty slow as usual, even though I did go on a fun date on Friday. All is well!

Well, I decided that I like to look at my family's blogs every now and then, so heres one of my own. I'm not a real exciting person but I do go to school at BYU-I (which really is the best). I'm currently taking 19 credits and studing communications. I'm not rally sure if I'm going to enphasis in advertizing or in public relations, we'll just have to see. Other fun things are just about nothing, except I went and a really fun date last night and I'm always looking for new date ideas. I'd say that thinking of good dates is the hardes thing about a date (even though asking the girl is alway really hard too. Nothen else....
